From Porta Uzeda you’ll head to Piazza Duomo where you’ll tour the Duomo di Catania, the monumental Norman cathedral built above the Roman Terme Achilliane. 10:00 Stop at the Piazza Duomo to admire the Palazzo degli Elefanti, La Fontana dell'Elefante (the symbol of Catania), and La Fontana dell'Amenano, an elegant 19th-century white marble fountain dedicated to the Greek river god, Amenanos. A few steps from Piazza Duomo you’ll find La Pescheria, the historic fish market, known for the fresh Mediterranean fish on offer as well as the wide variety of fresh vegetables. 10:30 Walk to the Piazza Universita', the center of Catanese culture, and admire the Palazzo dell'Universita', built in 1434 as the Siculorum Gymnasium. Note several Baroque-style buildings, including the Palazzo Sangiuliano. 11:00 Visit Catania’s Teatro Romano, one of the town’s top historic monuments. The theater was built on top of the ruins of a Greek-era theater. 11:30 Take a relaxing walk along the famous Via dei Crociferi, a site that has appeared in many films. Continue through the Arco di San Benedetto where you’ll admire the Chiesa di San Benedetto, the Chiesa di San Francesco di Borgia, il Colleggio dei Gesuiti, and the Chiesa di San Giuliano. 12:00 Take a break to enjoy traditional Catanese refreshments at a traditional kiosk.
