During this full-day guided walking tour of Catania, you’ll hear the story of a city that was rebuilt several times due to natural disasters. Visit the historic sites and buildings that reveal the diverse cultures that ruled Sicily over the centuries. 08:30 You’ll be picked up at your accommodation. 09:00 Meet your guide at Villa Pacini, in a public garden just outside the 16th-century city walls. From Porta Uzeda you’ll head to Piazza Duomo where you’ll tour the Duomo di Catania, the monumental Norman cathedral built above the Roman Terme Achilliane. 10:00 Stop at the Piazza Duomo to admire the Palazzo degli Elefanti, La Fontana dell'Elefante (the symbol of Catania), and La Fontana dell'Amenano, an elegant 19th-century white marble fountain dedicated to the Greek river god, Amenanos. A few steps from Piazza Duomo you’ll find La Pescheria, the historic fish market, known for the fresh Mediterranean fish on offer as well as the wide variety of fresh vegetables. 10:30 Walk to the Piazza Universita', the center of Catanese culture, and admire the Palazzo dell'Universita', built in 1434 as the Siculorum Gymnasium. Note several Baroque-style buildings, including the Palazzo Sangiuliano. 11:00 Visit Catania’s Teatro Romano, one of the town’s top historic monuments. The theater was built on top of the ruins of a Greek-era theater. 11:30 Take a relaxing walk along the famous Via dei Crociferi, a site that has appeared in many films. Continue through the Arco di San Benedetto where you’ll admire the Chiesa di San Benedetto, the Chiesa di San Francesco di Borgia, il Colleggio dei Gesuiti, and the Chiesa di San Giuliano. 12:00 Take a break to enjoy traditional Catanese refreshments at a traditional kiosk. Try seltz limone e sale to get reenergized. 12:30 Discover reminders of the city’s Roman age. Visit the ruins of the Anfiteatro Romano, built around the second century A.D. Due to several lava flows that reached Catania over the centuries, the amphitheater is partially buried and lies below the Piazza Stesicoro, surrounded by stunning 18th-century buildings. 13:00 Meet up with your driver and head off to the northern side of Mount Etna, famous for the production of quality DOC wines. Visit one of the top winemakers on Etna and taste 4 different wines as well as other local products. Your tasting will be guided by a professional sommelier. 17:30 Return to your local accommodation.
