Riserva Naturale Foce del Fiume Platani
Sicily
The Natural Reserve of the River Platani is made up of 200 hectares of Mediterranean vegetation, natural habitat for many plant species. Of particular importance is the presence of retama, a white flowering broom common in Africa.
The mouth of the river, with its damp and its dunes where the sea lily thrives, is ideal habitat for many species of migratory birds: herons, the 'Knight of Italy', avocets, Kentish plovers, marsh harriers and peregrine falcons.
The area is the first place to stop for birds from Africa. A short distance away are worth a visit the ruins of Eraclea Minoa, overlooking the coast of Agrigento which is tinted in green, white and blue, and the pristine beach of Capo Bianco.
