According to legend there was a great love between Acis, the spirit of the Acis River, and the sea nymph Galatea. After the death of Acis the tears of Galatea gave birth to the river Acis, which flows past Acireale.

Things to see in Acireale are many: the church of San Biagio, the public parks Parco delle Terme and Villa Belvedere, the beautiful nature reserve Timpa di Acireale, the Cathedral square and the Baroque cathedral, historic buildings like the Palazzos Modò, Pennisi and Musmeci, dating back to the 17th and 18th century.

Famous  is the carnival of Acireale that attracts many visitors with its spectacular parades, costumes and floats.

Leisure activities in Acireale include a walk from the town down to the coast through the nature reserve Timpa di Acireale, festivals, concerts, theatre, thermal baths and open-air markets.
