Description
The trail leads to Mount Etna’s summit craters, offering a rare view of natural volcanic phenomena including gas emissions, fumaroles, and sulphur minerals. Participants start from Piano Provenzana at 1800 meters altitude, traveling by off-road 4WD vehicles through diverse vegetation to reach an observatory at 2800 meters.
From the observatory, a 5 km uphill trek begins through a lunar landscape with volcanic bombs and slag, ascending 500 meters over about 1 hour 30 minutes to the central summit crater at 3300 meters. After reaching the summit, the descent follows a sandy volcanic channel with geological points of interest, lasting approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
The tour concludes with a return to Piano Provenzana by 4WD vehicles from the Pizzi Deneri observatory. Total walking time is about 3 hours, with a total excursion duration of approximately 5 hours.
