Description

Duration: approximately 5/6 hours ⛰️ Route: easy level Recommended equipment: wind jacket, closed or trekking shoes, long trousers, a backpack with poles. Meeting point: At the car park in front of the LIDL in Via Regina del Cielo 8 in Fiumefreddo Sicilia (Catania). Pack your backpack and embark on an adventurous trek to discover Etna! Together with your qualified guide you will visit recent and ancient lateral lava flows. You'll climb to the top of extinct side craters and explore a lava flow cave. Our tour will start directly from Fiumefreddo di Sicilia in our Starting Point (if your hotel is located in the surrounding areas of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, our driver will pick you up directly at your facility). Tour organisation You will climb along the eastern side of Etna and our guide will make the first stop in Sant'Alfio, a small village of 1490 inhabitants and 530 m above sea level. With your guide you will admire the majesty of the mother church, the only one in the ethnic territory to have an external facade set up entirely in lava stone, between the 18th century and the 21st century of the Holy Martyrs San Filadelfo, San Cirino, Sant'Alfio. Continue and climb along the road that runs alongside the 1928 lava flow that destroyed the town of Mascali. During the climb towards an altitude of 1800m the vegetation will change quickly, from a vegetation composed of citrus fruits or fruit trees you will cross chestnut groves and then reach a wonderful and unique birch forest, where together with your guide you will go trekking to get to the top of the lateral craters of 1865. (The trekking activity will take place on a flat and sandy path with no difficulties, therefore suitable for children and elderly people.). Once at the summit you can admire the panoramic view that extends over the Ionian coast, Taormina, Fiumefreddo, Giarre and Riposto and, in the absence of mist, the Calabrian coast with the shadow of the Stromboli volcano and of the Aeolian Islands. Once you reach the top of the craters, our guide will offer you a small aperitif based on limoncello and almond paste. Once the visit to the lateral craters is concluded, we will go to the northern side to visit the last major volcanic eruption of 27 October 2002, the one that marked the destruction of the tourist resort. Subsequently we will explore a lava flow cave
