San Nicolò dei Cordari
Sicily
The Basilica di San Nicolò dei Cordari greets you at the entrance to the Archaeological Park in Syracuse. The church was built in the 11th century above a Roman cistern. In 1093 in this lovely church took place the funeral of Jordan, son of the Norman Count of Sicily Roger I.
This little basilica retains its original appearance, there is only one apse with three small and narrow window. Despite the completely missing decoration the church is an elegant example of Norman architecture. Through glass plates in the floor you can admire several archaeological finds.
The cistern under the church was used over centuries as a water reservoir until the famine of 1672 when people were buried here.
Today the church houses a tourist information office. (Hours: from 9:00 am to two hours before sunset. Closed on Mondays.)
