Noto, Modica and Ragusa: The Baroque Tour from Catania
116 ReviewsDiscover the heart of Sicily of the late Baroque period. Rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693 it is part of UNESCO's World Heritage.
The Monastero di Santo Spirito in Agrigento was founded by the Chiaramonte family on August 27, 1299 . In the chain of a truss is painted the coat of arms of the family and a relief of the same coat of arms is the keystone of the arch of the dormitory .
The monastery has a rectangular shape with two longer sides and consists of a body of two-and three-storey factories in the north-west side containing the church, in the south-east side are the refectory and dormitory, the chapter house and the chapels. The single nave interior of the church maintains a medieval structure with a coffered ceiling. On the left wall is a marble statue of the Madonna and Child from the school of Gagini.
The nuns run a B&B inside the monastery, which is open all year.
If you are around lunch time in the area, go and try the nun's sweet cous cous - simply delicious!
