Castello Svevo
Sicily
The tower of the castle of Randazzo, visible from Piazza San Martino and placed on a precipice of lava rock, is the only survivor of the seven towers that guarded the city. This crenellated tower has been transformed into a permanent cultural centre, home to exhibitions of art, an interesting collection of Sicilian puppets, and since 1998 it also houses the archaeological Museum Paolo Vagliasindi.
The castle is a quite horrid place, in which people were buried alive, there are a torture chamber and the gallery of skulls, now restored and returned to citizenship. The portal is surmounted by the Swabian eagle.
