Alcantara Gorge - Gole dell'Alcantara
Sicily
The Alcantara Gorge is a unique and timeless place where walls and cliffs were created by the lava flow of the Mount Etna thousands of years ago. In some places it is only 2 metres wide with dramatic 25 metre high cliffs and an ice cold river running in between them.
The climb down to the water edge takes 110 steps, so expect the same on the way back. There is a lift though, so don't worry if you don't fancy the climb.
There is so much to do, especially if you are holidaying with kids. They will love dunking and paddling in the icy water, scrambling on the stones or hopping from one stone to another while you are basking in the sun. Don't forget to bring a swim suit if you dare to have a dunk. You can rent waders and float with the current.
