Parco Monte Serra
Sicily
Monte Serra is a suburban park lying on the slopes of Mount Etna, protected and managed by 'Amici della Terra' along with the a non-profit organization Onlus.
The park boasts 30 hectares of colourful forest which almost mimic the forests that can be found in tropical Asia and America. Its habitants include beautiful butterflies, reptiles, insects, birds flying freely around you, but also unusual typical tropical and very aromatic plants.
The best must be the Butterfly House, where one can watch caterpillars turning in to beautiful butterflies, and learn more about the butterfly's life cycle, feed them while trying to recognize and name all the different types.
There are many natural trails and itineraries. You can walk up the 350 stairs made from lava leading up to the Mount Etna summit, or pack up some picnic and enjoy an original alfresco dinning surrounded by oak forests and vineyards
