Orecchio di Dionisio

Sicily

The legendary Orecchio di Dionisio - Dionysius Ear  can be found only 5 min walk from the masterpiece of Syracuse, the Greek Theatre, which is located in the Archaeological Park Neapolis. The natural setting enhances the historical and charming atmosphere. The entrance to the Dionysius Ear is as the name suggest of a pointed ear shape.

This 23 metres high natural cave carved into the rock carries a legend that it used to be a prison of the tyrant Dionysius. Thanks to its incredible high ceilings, which are pretty overwhelming, the acoustics is remarkable, so if you whisper at one end it can be clearly heard by all elsewhere, even outside. The prisoners were not aware of that, so Dionysius was allowed to hear all the voices and conversations.

In May the archaeological park closes at 16.30 h.
