Museo Regionale della Ceramica Caltagirone
Sicily
The museum shows through the collection of artifacts from all over Sicily the historical production of ceramics in the island, from prehistoric times to the early twentieth century, with particular reference to the articles of Caltagirone.
Caltagirone infact, during the manufacture of ceramics, is known since the period of the Muslim conquest of the island. Through the centuries the city has continued to be the centre of flourishing production and is still one of the main references of ceramic art in Italy.
The artifacts on display come largely from local collections belonging to the Museum and the Art Institute for Ceramics 'Luigi Sturzo', but there are also materials loaned to other museums and even the Sicilian regional valuable collection 'Russo Perez', purchased by the Region of Sicily in the late '50s.
