Description
Mount Etna is not only the highest active volcano in Europe: it is a universe of landscapes, colors, and stories that change with each eruption. On this excursion, you will experience an authentic adventure at its foot, among extinct craters, ink-black lava flows, and breathtaking views of the Sicilian coast.
After a comfortable meeting point in Catania, we will board a minivan to Rifugio Sapienza on the south side of the volcano. There are short scenic stops along the way, perfect for getting to know Mount Etna and understanding how the eruptions have shaped the area and the villages around Etna over time. Your guide will share anecdotes, interesting facts, and the most significant episodes of recent eruptive history, making the journey itself part of the experience.
Once you reach an altitude of 1,920 meters, an easy scenic trekking route will begin, taking you up to about 2,000 meters above sea level. You will walk on volcanic paths with an almost lunar charm, among ancient extinct craters and old, now-solidified lava flows, where vegetation is slowly reclaiming space. The pace is also suitable for those who are not particularly fit, and the guide will stop at the most picturesque spots to explain geological phenomena, landscape features, and interesting facts about life on the volcano.
Your adventure continues with a visit to a lava slide cave. Wearing a helmet and carrying a flashlight, you'll safely descend into a tunnel created by the passage of lava to get a close-up look at the rock formations and understand how these unique underground environments are formed. A fascinating moment that will make you truly feel like you are 'inside' the volcano.
Throughout the hike you will be accompanied by an expert local guide, ready to answer your questions, point out the best photo spots, and tell you about Mount Etna not only from a scientific point of view, but also through local traditions and legends. As a final stop, you will go to a local farm in a unique environmental setting, surrounded by vineyards and views of the volcano, where you can enjoy a food tasting of local Etna products. At the end of the tour, you will return to the point of departure with the feeling of having had an intense and complete experience, suitable for both novice hikers and those who want to discover the volcano in an authentic and safe way.
