Piazza del Duomo Taormina
Sicily
The cathedral dates back to 13th century. It is a'fortress-church', has three aisles and a Latin-cross plan. A dozen pink marble columns hold up the nave.
At the centre of the square you'll find a beautiful Baroque fountain, built in 1635. Some steps are leading up to it. The fountain is topped by the symbol of the city of Taormina, a cute Minotaur.
The Piazza del Duomo is a popular spot for both locals and visitors - you can rest on the steps of the fountain, do some shopping or have a drink at the bar Billy & Billy. It once was the favourite place of illustrious artists who visited Taormina in the past - think Alexandre Dumas Jr., Tennessee Williams, Robert Faulkner, Johannes Brahms, Oscar Wilde, Guy de Maupassant, and Richard Wagner.
The Ristorante Al Duomo is one of the best restaurants in town.
