Description
Begin your trip at Piano Provenzana, situated 1,800 meters on Mount Etna's northern side. Traveling by specially-equipped 4x4 vehicles, visit the ruins of the Le Betulle Hotel, the only remaining structure from the 2002 lava flow.
Continue to the Umberto and Margherita craters, where you will undertake a short hike at 2,380 meters altitude. Then, proceed to the volcanological observatory at Pizzi Deneri (2,818 meters), with an optional 15-minute trek to its summit promontory.
Weather permitting, views extend to the Aeolian Islands, the Ionian coast from Syracuse to Taormina, the Gulf of Giardini Naxos, and the Calabrian coast. Observe Mount Etna’s summit craters overlooking the Valle del Bove.
The tour concludes with a visit to the 2002 eruption area, featuring distinctive buttonhole craters and lava flows, followed by a short descent to the vehicles for the return to Piano Provenzana.
