Description
Explore Europe’s highest active volcano on a guided trek to the summit with an authorized mountain and volcanological guide. Starting from Piano Provenzana at 1800 metres above sea level (Etna North), travel in 4x4 vehicles up to 2,825 metres near Piano delle Concazze, the only current safe access point to the summit.
The hike continues on foot for about two hours to the main crater rim at 3,320 metres altitude. Along the way, walk on the edge of the Central Crater, observe the steep Northeast Crater, and view the Southeast Crater, known for recent eruptions. Experience the volcanic environment with gas emissions, volcanic bombs, and vivid earth colors caused by sublimation of elements like sulfur.
The descent path is covered with fine volcanic ash and slag and offers panoramic views of the Sicilian coast. The guide provides informative breaks describing the volcano’s history, formation, and features. Upon returning to 2,825 metres, take the 4x4 back to Piano Provenzana, concluding this distinctive Sicilian experience.
