Description
The Etna Summit Craters excursion is undoubtedly the most fascinating one you can do on Etna.
During the trek, you'll be able to observe the vastness of the sulfate-filled crater depressions, where most of the explosive activity takes place, arousing in visitors a sense of mysterious power that few other places in the world can convey.
We ascend by cable car and jeep to 2,800 meters, from there we continue on foot to the Summit Craters, 3,340 meters. After visiting the craters, we descend on foot along slopes of volcanic ash to look out over the Belvedere della Valle del Bove, an extraordinary caldera belonging to ancient eruptive centers.
Finally, skirting the imposing eruptive cone of the 'Laghetto' crater, we reach the cable car terminal, which will comfortably take us back to the starting point.
It will be a journey through geology and volcanology, admiring the active craters of Bocca Nuova, Voragine, the Northeast Crater, and the Southeast Crater.
The hike to Etna's summit craters, given its challenging nature, is suitable for those accustomed to challenging hikes. It is strictly not recommended for those with heart conditions or those who are unfit.
to take the cable car back to the starting point, the Rifugio Sapienza, 1900m. The hike lasts 5-6 hours.
