Description
Itinerary: The Cathedral in the Sea and the Wild Cliffs
During the hike, you will visit the majestic Penna Kiln, a stone giant known as the “Cathedral in the Sea,” one of Italy’s most fascinating monuments of industrial archaeology. As you admire its towering arches and the chimney stack rising against the blue sky, your guide will share the history of this former brick factory, which is now a global cinematic icon thanks to the Inspector Montalbano series.
We will pass through the traditional seaside village of Sampieri and continue towards the Costa di Carro Park, following a nature trail that runs along the sea among sand dunes and limestone rock, enveloped by the rich scents of the Mediterranean maquis: wild fennel, thyme, and the characteristic dwarf palms that dot the landscape. We will then reach a stretch of high, rugged coastline, where the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks will serve as the soundtrack to your hike. Here, far from the crowded beaches, you will be able to see the Grotta dei Colombi (Dove Cave) and the spectacular natural fissures in the rock, such as the striking ‘a Spaccazza, which bear witness to the age-old power of marine erosion.
In this natural sanctuary, you can recharge your batteries while admiring the golden sandy coves sheltered by yellow sandstone cliffs. You will have time to take incredible photos from the highest vantage points, where your gaze can sweep freely to the horizon of the Strait of Sicily, before heading back.
The excursion will conclude with drop-off back at your car parking spot, depending on the option you selected.
