Description

Set off from Piazza Stesicoro in the heart of Catania at 8:30 AM and travel by minibus towards Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano. Along the way, stop at a charming village on the volcano’s slopes for a coffee break and the chance to pick up local snacks such as arancini or a Sicilian parmigiana sandwich. Begin the hike at approximately 1,970 metres above sea level and head towards the Silvestri Craters at around 2,000 metres. From there, venture off the beaten path to the Barbagallo Crater, born from the July 2001 eruption, and ascend to roughly 2,400 metres. At this altitude, take in the breathtaking panoramic views of Valle del Bove — the grandest caldera on Mount Etna — and pause for a well-deserved lunch break surrounded by volcanic scenery. At around 1:15 PM, begin the descent along a completely different route. Walk through Grotta Pitagora, a fascinating natural lava tube, and experience an exciting dash across volcanic sand channels. After a short break at the Etna Sud tourist station, return to Catania by late afternoon. This tour is designed for adventurous hikers who are comfortable with moderate physical challenges and enjoy long walks in nature. A certified hiking guide accompanies the group throughout the entire experience.
