Description
The tour begins at Piazza Stesicoro with a minibus transfer to Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. On the way, pause at a village on the volcano’s slopes for coffee and local snacks such as arancini or Sicilian parmigiana sandwiches.
The hike starts around 1,970 metres above sea level, heading to the Silvestri Craters near 2,000 metres. Then proceed to the Barbagallo Crater, formed by the 2001 eruption, ascending to approximately 2,400 metres. Here, enjoy panoramic views of Valle del Bove, Mount Etna’s largest caldera, and have lunch surrounded by volcanic terrain.
At about 1:15 PM, begin a different descent route through Grotta Pitagora, a natural lava tube, followed by an exciting walk across volcanic sand channels. After a break at the Etna Sud tourist station, return to Catania in the late afternoon. A certified hiking guide accompanies the group throughout.
