Description
Island of Lachea, Aci Trezza
Lachea Island, the largest of the Cyclops archipelago near Aci Trezza, is part of the Integral Natural Reserve Isola Lachea and Faraglioni dei Ciclopi, established in 1998. Formed by subvolcanic activity, it contains archaeological finds including a prehistoric diorite axe, cave tombs, and Roman-era artifacts. The island also hosts a naturalistic museum showcasing local flora and fauna.
The Faraglioni
These sea stacks are linked to the legend of the Cyclops Polyphemus from the Odyssey. Scientifically, they formed during the first phase of Mount Etna’s volcanic activity about 500,000 years ago. The stacks are part of a protected marine area comprising Lachea Island and surrounding rocks.
Norman Castle, Aci Castello
This castle, located in the province of Catania, played a key role in the medieval development of the Aci area. Over time it was controlled by Roger of Lauria, John of Sicily, and the Alagona family. The castle sits on a basaltic promontory formed from ancient underwater lava flows dating back 500,000 years. It now houses a civic museum.
