Description

Explore the wonders and botanical rarities of Palermo's historic Garden, guardian of plant beauty from all corners of the globe, with a certified nature guide. Founded in 1789, it's one of Italy's most prestigious academic institutions. From the elegant Gymnasium, once home to the Royal School of Botany, to the interactive Tineo Room, you'll stroll through the avenues of the large garden, a true open-air museum boasting the coexistence of thousands of species, many of which spread to the rest of Europe from this very spot. Compared to other botanical gardens, Palermo's is one of the few to present almost all of its collections grown in the open ground, thanks to Sicily's climate. Majestic and noteworthy specimens include, for example, some specimens of Ficus Macrophylla, whose size certainly does not go unnoticed, the curious Ceiba Speciosa tree, also called false Cotton, with its large colorful flowers, or the Dragon's Blood tree, with its characteristic sap, or the very tall Guinness Book of World Records specimen of Araucaria columnaris. The large tank dedicated to many aquatic species, the Aquarium, deserves a special mention, surrounded by a small and lush bamboo grove. Discover this and more on this walk, which isn't just a green break from the chaos of the city, but a tour to discover one of Palermo's most fascinating places.
