Description

In the heart of underground Syracuse, the Catacomb of St. John opens as a labyrinth of tunnels, arcosoli and monumental rotundas, testifying to the expressive power of early Christianity in Sicily. Past the Basilica of San Giovanni, one enters the main gallery, along which thousands of burials follow one another. Among them emerge richly decorated tombs. Following the play of light and shadow, one rediscovers a world in which death was not the end, but the passage to eternal life, celebrated with rites, prayers and offerings, in a dimension of faith that time has not erased.
