Mount Etna and Alcantara Gorge Full-Day Tour from Taormina

This guided full-day tour suits nature lovers and hikers, starting from Taormina or Giardini Naxos to explore Mount Etna and Alcantara Gorge.

Description

The tour begins around 8:30 AM with pickup from Taormina or Giardini Naxos. Travel by minibus through two traditional mountain villages on the way to Mount Etna. After approximately 45 minutes, you will arrive at a mountain chalet located about 1,500 meters above sea level for a short break and to receive trekking boots and walking poles.

Your English-speaking local guide will explain the hiking route, which covers 4 to 5 km through forest paths and open lava fields. You will walk across Etna’s volcanic “black desert” and reach a panoramic viewpoint near the northern craters, with wide views of the surrounding landscape.

You will then explore a lava cave with helmet and torch provided, learning about the formation of these volcanic tunnels and Etna’s eruption history from your guide.

After the hike, return to the chalet for a one-hour lunch break. Choose between a lighter meal including a sandwich, drink, and cake, or a full meal with pasta, bruschetta, drink, and coffee. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available on request.

In the afternoon, a transfer of about 45 minutes takes you to the Alcantara River. Here you can walk inside the first hundred meters of the Alcantara Gorge, observing the basalt rock formations shaped by ancient lava flows and water erosion. There is the option to swim in the river or relax by the riverbanks before returning to Taormina and Giardini Naxos around 4:00 to 5:00 PM.
