In the heart of Pantelleria, far from the more familiar images of lava cliffs and the open sea, there is a place that can surprise even those who think they already know the island. On Montagna Grande, within the National Park, the landscape changes completely: here, you enter the enchanting “Fairy Forest,” a lush, dense, and tranquil green setting that seems to belong to another world.
The “Bagno di Bosco” trail is a roughly 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) hiking loop that passes through what is known as the island’s climax ecosystem, i.e., the most developed and stable form of local vegetation. In this setting, nature expresses itself without interference, offering a rare and authentic spectacle. You walk through lush pine and holm oak forests, in a cool and shady environment that contrasts with the more arid and rugged image of Pantelleria.
What makes this forest even more captivating is its unique natural balance. Here, unique atmospheric phenomena come into play, such as what is known as “phantom precipitation”: moisture in the air condenses as dew on the leaves, slowly nourishing the soil and enabling the vegetation to thrive even in the absence of regular rainfall. This is a delicate and remarkable system that silently and continuously sustains life.
The route follows well-marked trails but requires a decent level of fitness. It is recommended to tackle the trail with appropriate hiking shoes, water, and a basic level of fitness. The effort is more than rewarded by the beauty of the landscape: the deep green, the cool shade, the scents of the forest, and above all, the silence – one of the island’s most precious and rare treasures.
