Description
The excursion starts at 1900 meters altitude with a cable car and off-road minibus ride up to the permitted altitude near Etna’s summit. From there, the guided hike begins, reaching the central crater at approximately 3345 meters above sea level.
Participants will experience the surreal volcanic environment with fumes, gases, and sulfur deposits. The summit offers panoramic views of the Ionian coast and surrounding villages. The route includes crossing ancient eruptive cones, extensive lava fields, and passing a viewpoint overlooking the Valle del Bove, a large volcanic depression formed by past eruptions.
The tour returns to the starting point at 1900 meters after approximately 5.5 hours, though walking pace and conditions may affect the timing.
Schedule (Approximate)
- 7:20-7:40 AM: Pickup in Catania city center
- 8:45-9:00 AM: Arrival at Mount Etna excursion starting point
- 9:30 AM: Guided hike begins
- 3:00-3:30 PM: Return to starting point
- 4:00-5:00 PM: Drop-off in Catania
