Description

Enjoy a full-day tour of the infamous Corleonese area of Sicily, with round-trip private transfers from Palermo. Your first stop will be Portella della Ginestra, site of the 1st “state crime” of Italy, when 11 people were killed during the May Day celebrations, allegedly by the separatist leader, Salvatore Giuliano. Continue along stunning roads to the village of Corleone, notable as the birthplace of several Mafia bosses. A local escort will take you on a walking tour of the historic center, telling the history of its links with the Mafia, and of its magnificent culture and art. See where laborers used to wait to be hired by the Mafia gabelloti (tenant farmers) in Piazza Nascè. Admire the statue of the trade unionist and anti-Mafia campaigner Placido Rizzotto in Piazza Garibaldi, one of Italy’s oldest squares. Learn more Mafia history at the Laboratory of Legality, confiscated from the mob and now an art gallery of paintings by Sicilian artist Gaetano Porcasi that recreate the story of the Mafia and anti-Mafia movement. Walk down Via Bernardino Verro to Casa del Popolo, the agricultural co-operative set up by Corleone’s Socialist mayor, who was assassinated by the Mafia. Admire the natural cascades of the Cascata Delle Due Rocche, just a short walk from the town center. Then, drive to the natural reserve of Ficuzza woods surrounding the mountain peak of Rocca Busambra. Visit the Baroque hunting lodge of the Kingdom of 2 Sicilies. Continue to the small hamlet of Marineo in the Eleuterio valley, and admire the 16th-century castle built at the base of the Rocca. End at a local winery, and learn the process of wine making in Sicily, before sampling some delicious wines from the surrounding vineyards.
