Description
The tour begins at the pick-up point in central Catania, where you meet your naturalist guide before heading to Mount Etna’s slopes.
You will leave the city and travel off-road along ancient trazzere, historic rural tracks winding through volcanic terrain. Here, you can observe lava flows from the 1792 eruption while your guide shares details about Etna’s history and the local flora and fauna.
Your journey continues to Bove Valley, a vast caldera formed about 64,000 years ago after volcanic collapse. This natural amphitheater offers views of Etna’s geological features past and present.
At approximately 2,000 meters elevation, you take an easy walk through lunar-like terrain, exploring the Silvestri Craters and lava fields from the 2001 and 2003 eruptions. You will also visit a lava tunnel shaped by molten rock flows.
The trail provides sweeping views of the Sicilian coastline and the city of Catania below, highlighting Etna’s influence on the surrounding landscape.
The experience concludes with a glass of local Etna wine at sunset, offering memorable views of the volcanic surroundings before returning to Catania’s city center.
